It's clear that Brand Medical Sales Reps (MSRs) now find themselves at a crossroads.
The nature of GP relationships has changed over the years to a point where GPs now, more than ever before, question the value of their relationship with MSRs and implicitly with the MSRs’ company.
Research now shows that:
- MSRs have fewer meetings with fewer GPs
- When the meetings do occur they are of shorter duration
- Less and less calls are seen as memorable
- There is a lack of trust in what some MSRs say
- GPs are less noise responsive to marketing collateral
The key factors that have influenced this are the changing relationship between the PCT and the GP, with GPs having less and less autonomy, along with budget pressure to prescribe more generics.
In the coming months and years these trends are only going to intensify the pressure on MSRs to gain quality time with the GP or other healthcare professionals (HCP).

between the Medical Sales Representative and the GP/HCP. Medical Sales Representatives need to exhibit a new style of behaviour which will be seen as more consultative, more confident, more knowledgeable and delivering more value with GPs around the
drug. This will move the relationship to one of a ‘trusted advisor’, which will lead to more quality time with the GP or HCP to be able to position the drug as superior to those of the competition and/or generics and to increase sales.
